LMSA scholars participated in the Carnegie Science Center Mobile Fab Lab on March 19th, 20th, and 21st 2024.
6th Grade - Earthquake Engineering Challenge: Scholars were tasked with utilizing digital fabrication tools to construct a structure capable of withstanding simulated earthquakes on a shake table. They devised components designed for laser cutting on foam core material. Assembling the pieces solely with pencils, without the aid of glue or tape, students aimed to erect the tallest structure that could endure on the earthquake table for a minimum of 30 seconds. Throughout the challenge, students had multiple chances to refine and redesign their structures. Their creativity and perseverance were on display. One student said, "If I ever build a house, I'm going to think back to this 6th grade moment."
7th Grade - Egg Drop Engineering Challenge: Scholars were tasked with engineering a structure capable of protecting an egg from cracking when dropped down a stairwell. Working in pairs, students designed components to be laser-cut from foam core material. Subsequently, they assembled the pieces using only foam core, abstaining from the use of glue or tape. Upon reflecting on the activity, students expressed a desire for another opportunity to explore alternative designs which exemplifies the engineering design process.
8th Grade - Rockets Engineering Challenge: Scholars were tasked with designing rocket wings from foam core, utilizing a laser cutter to cut. Following this, they constructed the rocket body and tip using construction paper. Assembling the components with duct tape, they prepared the rocket for launch. Subsequently, the rocket was placed on a launcher, and air pressure was used to launch their rockets. Scholars were excited to see how high their rocket would go, “The smile on Reggie White's face when his rocket soared high into the air was priceless and something I'll always remember".
